The Differences Between Straight, Curved, And Outdoor Stairlifts

If it is your first time navigating the stairlift market, you might be experiencing some difficulties in differentiating all the different options available today. Every staircase is built according to the homeowner’s needs, preferences, and the home’s interior layout. Similarly, a stairlift has to be able to suit your needs and be compatible with its surroundings. Before you install a stairlift in your home, the supplier will send a consultant to take measurements of your staircase and surrounding fixtures before giving their professional opinion on which option works best. Deciding which type best suits your situation might not be the easiest thing to do, but you can start by finding out the key differences between straight, curved, and outdoor stairlifts.

Straight Stairlifts

Straight stairlifts, regardless of whether they are seated or standing, are likely to be the most affordable. These stairlifts move along a straight rail and do not bend. If you have a typical, straight staircase in your home, and are facing mobility issues, a straight stairlift is all you need to conveniently utilize your stairs. You just need to ensure is that there is sufficient landing space at both the top and bottom of your staircase, allowing you to access your stairlift chair in a safe manner. There are many straight stairlift options today that look sleek and take up little space, so you need not worry if this is your primary concern. Just like the other options, the rails are usually made from strong aluminum.

Curved Stairlifts

As its name suggests, you will need a curved stairlift for staircases with curves or bends in them. However, you can leave the measurements to the experts while you decide whether they are suitable for your home. Alternatively, if your staircase is largely straight, except for a slight curve at the bottom or the top of the stairs, you might just need to install a landing platform. Consultants will be able to advise you whether your staircase is fanned, has a half landing, or whether it is spiral in nature. Once they have measured the curvature of your staircase, there will be no problem installing a curved stairlift.

It is important to note that since each curved stairlift is made to suit the structure of your stairs, there is a lot of customization involved. This means you will have to factor for a longer time installation process, and a heftier price tag.

Outdoor Stairlifts Fret not if you have an outdoor staircase. You have the option of installing an outdoor stairlift! It is identical in terms of function to the straight and curved types of stairlifts, meaning it can transport you up and down your outdoor stairs in a safe manner. However, since it will need to account for the possible weather conditions and other elements associated with the outdoors, the materials used to construct these stairlifts will be different from indoor models, typically using more weather-resistant materials. When you choose to install an outdoor stairlift, you can once again enjoy the space in your backyard or patio, allowing you to relax and soak in the sunlight. Rest assured that outdoor stairlifts come equipped with durable covers that can further protect them from the elements.
